Sierra Nevada faces the first weekend of April with more than 90 skiable kilometres, with slopes in all areas of the resort, the entire operating vertical drop (1,200 metres), up to two and a half metres thick, and an extensive sports and music programme in what is one of the busiest and liveliest moments of the 2023/24 winter season.  After last weekend's snowfalls and strong winds, the resort's technical services have recovered the offer prior to the passage of the Nelson squall, which, in addition to bringing between 50 and 80 centimetres of new snow, hit some of the resort's ski lifts hard, generating blocks of ice on pulleys and rockers, and unhooking the cable of chairlifts such as Stadium, Monachil or Virgen de las Nieves.  All in all, the resort faces the spring season with great snow conditions. The Laguna and Borreguiles areas accumulate up to two and a half metres of powder snow, the same quality as in the Veleta area with almost two metres of snow on some pistes. The other three sectors of the resort, Loma Dílar, Río and Cauchiles-Parador accumulated between 75 and 130 centimetres of spring snow.

Intense sporting and musical agenda
As for the rest, the sporting and musical agenda this weekend is one of the most intense of the winter season.
The Sun and Snow festival kicks off this Friday with its fifth edition, the most ambitious electronic music event held at the highest altitude in southern Europe, with four stages distributed from Pradollano to Borreguiles, where - until Sunday - 36 musical sessions will take place.
The sports agenda includes five major events. The most popular will be the Ultra Sierra Nevada with more than 1,500 mountain runners registered in its four distances: Ultra, Trail, Marathon and Half Marathon. The main event, the 100 km Ultra, starts this Friday (22.00h) in Granada; the first runners will arrive at Pradollano, after reaching an altitude of 3,000 metres, at midday on Saturday.
Another of the big events will be the National Veterans Trophy, which will attract the best Spanish skiers in the Masters category to Sierra Nevada. This edition will be dedicated to the late former president of the FADI, Juan Luis Hernández, who was one of the driving forces behind this competition.
On the other hand, one of the best Spanish skiers of all time, Carolina Ruiz, will be at the head of theAudio Quattro Cup-Carolina Ruiz Challenge, considered one of the most important ski competitions for children on the national scene. 
The Andalusian University Alpine Skiing Championship and theTrofeo Ruralito - Copa Andalucía de Esquí Alpino complete the sports agenda for the first weekend of April.

Sierra Nevada expands new snowpark for spring

The new snow situation in Sierra Nevada has allowed since this weekend the extension of the snowpark to four lines of modules and jumps (and a fifth under construction) on both sides of the Loma de Dílar chairlift, with which the freestyle offer experiences a significant growth for the spring season in the winter resort of Granada.
This is the implementation of the new snowpark project designed at the beginning of the season in collaboration with the Andalusian Winter Sports Federation and which has finally been carried out now thanks to the snowfall recorded in Sierra Nevada just over a week ago.
The construction of the snowpark, which will be finished in the first days of this week with new modules, has followed criteria of evolution by levels, from beginners to experts. Its location on the side of the Loma de Dílar chairlift allows for a high frequency of descents on the different lines.

The ski and mountain resort of Sierra Nevada has reached today, with 97 kilometres (118 slopes), the largest skiable surface since the 2019/20 season thanks to the accumulations of snow registered during the past weekend, with up to 2 metres in areas such as Borreguiles.
The opening of almost all the slopes in the Laguna area and a good part of the runs in the Parador-Cauchiles area has allowed Sierra Nevada to reach the last third of the season in the best moment of the 23/24 winter season.
The resort is also recovering some of the facilities affected by the storm, such as the snowpark, which from this weekend will have around 30 modules on both sides of the Loma de Dílar chairlift, as well as a platform in the big jumps sector, which will be used for the Spanish Slopestyle Championships on the weekend of 23 and 24 March.
Meanwhile, this weekend the resort will host four official sporting competitions: the Reyes Santa Olalla and Nazarí bumps trophies, as well as the White Camp and Club Monachil alpine skiing trophies, both of which count towards the Jesús Serra inclusive trophy.
Sierra Nevada also brings back the music sessions in Borreguiles with the performance of the DJs Julián Movilla and Rober Peinado this Friday 15th March on the Chill Out terrace.
Also, the activities for non-skiers in the Borreguiles area are back and the Mirlo blanco activities are still open in Pradollano with its toboggans, sledges, ice rink and Mirlo sledge.
The weather forecast for the next few days predicts predominantly clear skies, no significant winds and slightly rising temperatures.

FIS praises Sierra Nevada SBX World Cup

The International Ski Federation (FIS) has praised the organisation of the Sierra Nevada Snowboard Cross World Cup double World Cup this weekend, with the best SBX riders on the planet, in which the Granadan winter resort has shown its versatility to adapt to the circumstances arising from a very changeable weather.
                  The FIS Chief Director of Snowboard Cross Racing, Uwe Beier, underlined that "the World Cup in Sierra Nevada has been one of the highlights of our World Cup calendar in recent years". Sierra Nevada has hosted five SBX World Cups in 2020, 2023 and 2024. 
"Once again this year, despite the difficult snow conditions, they managed to fully commit and deliver two great World Cup competitions," said Beier, before continuing the discipline's world circuit this weekend in Cortina d'Ampezzo.
According to the FIS head of snowboard cross, "the level is really good and we would love to keep Sierra Nevada on the World Cup calendar in the coming years". For this reason, he hopes that the FIS will receive "confirmation of the application for the 2024/2025 calendar soon so that we can confirm it at the FIS spring meetings".
For his part, the CEO of Cetursa Sierra Nevada, Jesús Ibáñez, thanked the national and Andalusian federations, volunteers, the army, businessmen and sponsors, "especially Turismo Andaluz and the Consejería de Fomento", for their "work and involvement" in bringing off an event which, despite the difficulties in building the circuit, has been "a complete success".
"The resort and the organisation have adapted to the weather and snow conditions at all times, creating a great sporting spectacle at the highest level, which has not only been compatible with tourist skiing, but has also been an incentive," added Ibáñez, who, as has happened in the last World Cups, hopes for the involvement of public and private sponsorships to continue on the world snowboard cross circuit.
The Sierra Nevada SBX competition, sponsored by the Andalusian Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport with co-financing from the European Union, and organised by Cetursa Sierra Nevada and the Andalusian and Spanish winter sports federations, was the seventh event in this season's Snowboard Cross World Cup calendar, and after the World Cups on 2 and 3 March in Sierra Nevada, three more events remain to decide which riders will win the discipline's crystal globe.

Michaela Moioli and Merlin Surget win in the second Sierra Nevada SBX World Cup

2018 South Korea Olympic champion Micaela Moioli of Italy won the second Sierra Nevada SBX World Cup today in an eventful final round in which two of the world's best riders, Chloe Trespeuch (FRA) and Charlotte Bankes (GBR), collided metres before the finish line as they battled for first place. Trespeuch, with a heavy impact to the face, was knocked out of the race, while Bankes, trailing, came in third behind Australia's Josie Baff.
Moioli, surprised by the crash that gave her the win, admitted after stepping off the top of the podium, "I thought I was going to be third, but sometimes you get lucky and I'm happy about that. I'm also happy that Charlotte and Chloe are doing well".
In the men's category, Lucas Eguibar's absence from the final, after crashing in the last corner of qualifying, dampened the atmosphere on the Loma de Dílar SBX circuit, which until this weekend had been favourable to him. "I wanted to be too aggressive, I found a bump in the last corner and I crashed. You always have to be concentrated. But I'm already looking forward to the next races to get rid of the thorn from Sierra Nevada", explained the Spanish rider.
Without Eguibar - neither Toni Toledo nor Bernat Rivera - the Spanish representation in the final rounds was reduced to Álvaro Romero.
The young Spaniard from San Sebastian came out in the first of the final heats (round of 16) but came up just a few centimetres short of reaching the quarter-finals.With Lucas out, the big favourites of the world circuit went through the rounds, among them the leader of the SBX World Cup, the Canadian Elliot Grondin, and the current world champion, the Austrian Jakob Dusek.
However, Merlin Surget, supported by the French fans in the stands of the Loma de Dílar, dominated the final round and, despite the strong pressure to which he was subjected by Grondin, he obtained in Sierra Nevada the second victory of his World Cup record.With Grondin second - consolidating his lead in the overall standings - Jakob Dusek took the third step of the podium.  "It's not easy to win.We were expecting a lot of wind - then it didn't come - and it was a tough day.It's my third time here; now always Sierra Nevada for this victory", said the French rider.

This week, the Sierra Nevada winter resort has broken its all-time sales record in the campaign for advance purchase of discounted long-term ski passes, with nearly 5,200 passes sold for 10, 15, 20 days or for the entire individual or family season.
In the period between 15 September and 17 October, when the discount rate was 20% (except for the 15-day pass with a 30% discount), the resort dispensed 5,192 passes, which will generate more than 76,000 days of skiing. Both indicators (ski passes sold and days of skiing generated) represent an increase of more than 20% compared to the previous season, which until now was the best in the historical series.
From now until 10 November, the percentage of discounts for the same ski passes will be 10%, "so the sales figure, although at a slower rate in line with the trend of other pre-seasons, will continue to grow", predicted the CEO of Cetursa Sierra Nevada, Jesús Ibáñez.
For her part, the president of Cetursa Sierra Nevada and regional minister for Development, Territorial Planning and Housing of the Junta, Marifrán Carazo, underlined "the success of the campaign", which demonstrates the current good direction in the management of the winter resort in Granada.
"Sierra Nevada users are appreciating the improvements implemented by the team led by Jesús Ibáñez with the backing of the Junta de Andalucía. The heavy investments to improve all the services of Sierra Nevada are reflected in figures such as the advance sales of ski passes and underline the public's confidence in the resort," added Carazo.
Ibáñez pointed out that the advance sales figures are "a good indication" although "it is still too early to predict what the new winter season will be like, as, of course, the weather will have the last word".
As for the rest, the resort is continuing with the work to have the main new features for the season available, including the two new lifts, the Emile Allais and Alhambra chairlifts.
