Sierra Nevada will inaugurate night skiing on the illuminated slope of El Río this Saturday, 1 February, and it will continue every Saturday until 5 March. Thus, El Río, if the weather conditions do not prevent it, will open to the public, with freshly trodden snow, its 3.2 kilometres between the Borreguiles area (2,700m) and the Pradollano development (2,100m). This slope is illuminated with 30 floodlights to make it completely safe for night skiing.
Sierra Nevada, a pioneering resort in the practice of this activity, opens the Al-Andalus cable car from 19.00 to 21.30h, to give access to the illuminated El Río slope.
This activity has a special ski pass that can be purchased either online or at ticket offices and cashiers, which will remain open until 21:45. Likewise, those who want to ski during the day and at night can purchase a day + night ski pass pack.
The gondola lift will be open for skiers and for those who want to go up to watch the race, without interfering with the normal operation of night skiing. The start of the XIV Snow Running Sierra Nevada championship will be at 18:30.
On Saturday 22 February, night skiing will coincide with the astronomical activity dedicated to Orion and the winter constellations. The activity will begin with a talk in Sala Sulayr using the most advanced astronomical software available, to situate our planet and the Solar System as a whole in relation to our galaxy and the rest of the Universe (approximately 50 minutes). Then, under the extraordinary starry sky of Sierra Nevada, there will be an interpretation of the night sky with the naked eye from the Chill Out terrace, in which, using laser pointers, the astronomers of Azimuth will give the basis for understanding what can be seen in the starry sky.
