Find out what's new in the Sierra Nevada this summer

Not everybody likes summers at the beach and swimming pool, with their hustle and bustle to find a place for an umbrella or their queues to eat in any bar. A different and adventurous alternative for the youngest members of the family is to enjoy the Sierra Nevada and its summer activities. Every year it offers fun plans that also allow children to get to know a unique environment.
This summer, the resort returns to its summer event with its usual star proposals and with many new features, so that those who choose Sierra Nevada can enjoy an unforgettable summer.
The classics
Those who are already familiar with Sierra Nevada's summer activities know what its strong points are: the ski lifts, the swimming pool and the popular White Blackbird.
 Ski lifts. Sierra Nevada is once again opening a cable car and chairlift to go up from Pradollano to near the Veleta, where the views are breathtaking. It is possible to reach the summit until 27 August to contemplate an unbeatable landscape.
Swimming pool. The heated swimming pool of the Montebajo Sports Club opens its retractable roof so you can enjoy the most magical dip: surrounded by nature in Pradollano. It is open every day of the summer and is a great alternative to get away from the heat and noise.
White Blackbird. This is the most popular attraction for summer visitors to Sierra Nevada. This amusement park awaits visitors full of fun for the whole family at the end of the El Río slope, just a few metres from Pradollano. In the absence of snow for skiing or tobogganing, Mirlo Blanco is also an adrenaline rush with numerous options that not only impress the youngest members of the family.
Any day is a good day to enjoy a day out with family or friends at the resort, making fresh and original plans in a stunning location. The ski lifts, the swimming pool and the Mirlo Blanco amusement park are the most traditional proposals, but Sierra Nevada offers much more in summer.
What's new in Sierra Nevada: summer activities
The best thing about Sierra Nevada and its summer activities is that every year it offers new experiences for all ages, whether you want to enjoy them in a group, as a couple or even on your own. There is something for everyone!
 Astronomy. Each summer's programme is better than the last. There are activities as appetising as watching the sunrise or sunset from the Veleta peak and others as interesting as observing the night sky with a large telescope. For astronomy lovers, Sierra Nevada is the best place to enjoy different plans this summer.
E-bike routes. For sports and mountain lovers, Sierra Nevada proposes among its summer activities different routes for cyclists, whether they are experienced or beginners. The views from these trails and paths are worth the effort, and it's a healthy and fun proposal!
Camps. The Sierra Nevada summer camps 2023 think of everything from sports activities to language immersion. You can choose the type of camp according to the preferences of the children and their families. But in any of them they will learn while getting to know the Sierra Nevada.
For the youngest members of the family, these types of summer activities in Sierra Nevada are a different and original way to enjoy their holidays. Making new friends, playing their favourite games and sports or discovering a unique environment are more than enough reasons to choose this option this summer.
Nature
And if that wasn't enough, among the summer activities in the Sierra Nevada there are also proposals for the more adventurous. There are routes and excursions designed to show us the lesser-known side of the mountain.
 We all know what the resort looks like with its white blanket in winter, but... What happens when the snow melts? In the mountains 'appear' landscapes and hidden corners that we cannot miss.
 Guided routes. These are excursions in which you can discover the most interesting spots in the resort, guided tours on which you can go as far as the Veleta or marvel at the Laguna de las Yeguas.
Routes without a guide. Sierra Nevada also has proposals for you to discover some of its most beautiful places on your own, such as Fuente Alta, Las Chorreras, the Virgen de las Nieves or the Observatory.
Hiking in the high peaks. For the more adventurous, one of the most exciting summer activities in Sierra Nevada is to discover its highest peaks and its glacial lakes. There are several options: climbing the Veleta, climbing the Veleta and Los Machos or climbing the Tajos de la Virgen and Elorrieta.
In any of these options, the possibility of being in contact with nature is already reason enough to dare to start the journey.
What Sierra Nevada sounds like in summer
And if the Sierra Nevada and its summer activities were lacking in entertainment, there is also music, a traditional companion of the resort's summer nights.
The musical novelty of the season is the cycle La Bodega DJ'S &amp; Barbecue, high quality cuisine enlivened with sessions by renowned international DJ's such as Don Gonzalo, Mobox, Migueline and Donatella. Admission is free, with prior reservation of a table for dinner. 
 As every summer, the festival Por todo lo alto returns, which celebrates its thirteenth edition between 18 and 19 August, to enjoy rock bands such as Doctor Explosión, No Picky or Sarajevo'84.
 Among the musical novelties, the Granada International Music and Dance Festival moved to the Sierra Nevada on 15 July with a free concert by the band Apache, paying tribute to Pink Floyd and Supertramp.
With this cultural proposal in a unique setting, Sierra Nevada will sound like rock this summer, completing its summer activities in the best possible way.

Events

Sierra Nevada participates in mountain clean-up day

Cetursa Sierra Nevada workers, FAM and FADI sportsmen and women, and resort residents took part in the waste removal campaign prior to the opening of the summer season.
Several dozen Cetursa Sierra Nevada employees, sportsmen and women from the Andalusian Mountain Federation and the Andalusian Winter Sports Federation, as well as residents of Pradollano, took part today in the traditional mountain clean-up day, prior to the opening of the summer season at the ski and mountain resort, scheduled for Saturday 15 July.
The resort has provided the volunteers with the Veleta chairlift to access the higher parts of the mountain and all-terrain vehicles to collect the bags once they have been collected from the different paths and trails in the Borreguiles, Veleta, Rio and Loma de Dílar areas.
 Elements of trail markers affected by the winter storms have made up, together with plastic and cardboard containers, the bulk of the elements that have been appearing among the stones and vegetation on the trails.
The action has been coordinated by the Cetursa Sierra Nevada Slopes Service.

Laguna de la Caldera: enjoy the glaciers of the Sierra

 One of the most spectacular spots in the Sierra Nevada, and one that you can enjoy in all its splendour in summer, is the Caldera Lagoon.
It is a lagoon that receives water from the numerous snowfields that surround it, with a shape and depth that attract a lot of attention.
 In summer we can still enjoy the largest lagoon in the Sierra Nevada, formed in an ancient glacial cirque. Do you want to know where it is and how to get there to see it up close? Here we tell you all about it!
Where is the Laguna de la Caldera?
The Caldera Lagoon is an expanse of water that can occupy a maximum area of up to two hectares and is 14 metres deep, depending on whether or not the hydrological year has been favourable.
As we have said, it is the largest lake in the Sierra, although not the deepest.
We are talking about a high mountain lake, located on the southern slopes of the Sierra Nevada. Specifically, at an altitude of 3,026 metres.
It is in a small cirque of mountains that surround it, near the Refugio-Vivac de la Caldera. From there, it will be to our right if we look towards the valley formed by the Mulhacén River.
In its cone you can see some of the most crystalline waters of the Sierra Nevada. Although in summer it is possible to see the bottom of the lagoon due to the thaw.
There are many legends about this lagoon. For example, it was attributed a volcanic origin for many years, which gave rise to all kinds of stories. But now it is known that it is of glacial origin and is one of the few endorheic lagoons in the Sierra, which is why no river flows from it.
How to get to the Laguna de la Caldera in Sierra Nevada?
In order to get to the Laguna de la Caldera we have to be prepared to walk a long way. The ideal is to do the route of the Veleta and Mulhacén, whose itinerary allows you to enjoy this beautiful landscape.
It starts at the Posiciones del Veleta - which is accessed via the resort's summer ski lifts from Pradollano - until you reach the summit of the Veleta itself. From there, it passes through the Collado de la Carihuela pass, the Laguna de Río Seco and then on to the Laguna de la Caldera, and from there on to the highest peak on the Peninsula, the Mulhacén.
This route is of high difficulty and the walk takes between 8 and 9 hours, so you should be equipped with everything you need for this type of trail: suitable clothing and footwear, sun protection, a hat, a backpack with water and food, etc. Depending on when you go up to this point, it is advisable to take some warm clothes, because at this altitude the temperature difference is considerable.
It is a difficult hike but worth it because the views are breathtaking and because the Laguna de la Caldera turns into an ice rink during the winter, so summer is the best time to see how impressive it is.
The descent follows the same route, retracing our steps. So you will enjoy the scenery twice as much, it is a highly recommended excursion!

Hiking with children: what to look out for

If you are planning to go hiking with children this summer, it is very important that you plan your excursion well because, when you go out with the little ones, you can't leave anything to improvisation.
In Sierra Nevada you have some great routes for hiking with children, such as the Laguna de las Yeguas route; this trail is the most accessible of the ones we propose as the whole route is short (1,185m) and downhill. You can also make the ascent to the Veleta peak, the route is of medium level, but the lifts open in summer will take you up to 3,000m. Climbing to the summit from there is a wonderful experience for young and old alike, and the scenery is truly extraordinary. But, whether you choose these routes or any other, it is important to bear in mind certain factors when planning your hiking trip with children. Here are some useful tips and recommendations.
How to make a day's hiking with children the perfect plan
The little ones in the house get more tired than adults (at least, walking) and a hiking route with children does not go as smoothly because they like to stop and discover everything they find on their way.
This is something inevitable and the only thing we can advise you to do is to be patient. But there are aspects of your excursion that you can have under control if you plan it properly. 
Plan your route 
It is essential to plan the route in advance when hiking with children. The first few times, try not to make the route too hard for them or it will be too long for all of you.
Choose a short route where you can make some stops in between. Bingeing all at once is counterproductive, especially if you want them to want to do it again.
And along the way, adapt to their pace and allow them freedom of movement. Always under supervision but not with too many restrictions, because the idea is to give them a taste for nature.
Check the weather forecast
Knowing what the weather is going to be like on the day of the excursion is essential for all planning. From the time of departure to the clothes, footwear and the route itself.
If you are going hiking with children in summer, you should get up early to avoid the middle of the day and excessive heat. If it is in winter, you should dress warmly. And, if it is in autumn or spring, you will surely have to take into account the possibility of rain because this can lead to a change of route or a change of clothing and footwear, or even the cancellation of the excursion in the worst case scenario.
However, in the mountains the weather forecast can change from one moment to the next.
Suitable clothing and footwear
As we have said, the weather will determine what type of clothing and footwear we choose for a hiking route with children (sportswear, mackintosh if necessary, good walking shoes or boots, cap to protect from the sun, etc.). But there should always be a common denominator: comfort.
And, of course, especially when it comes to children, a spare change of clothes and sun cream should always be in the backpack.
Prepare enough food and drink
Last but not least, you should prepare food for the trip. In addition to snacks, it's a good idea to bring something to snack on, such as energy bars or nuts.
Water should be plentiful - better than plenty! But of course, remember that the little ones should not carry too much weight.
