Sierra Nevada hosts Spain's biggest international snow event of the year this weekend

Sierra Nevada has opened on Saturday, 30 November, snow activities for non-skiers in the Borreguiles area, which is accessed by the Al Ándalus gondola lift and the Borreguiles carpet, which will be operational during the usual winter timetable, from 09:00 to 16:45.
In Borreguiles, users can enjoy a snow area for sledges and doughnuts next to the Borreguiles carpet. The shop at the top station of the Al Ándalus gondola and the Central Grill restaurant in the Borreguiles building are also open to the public.
In Pradollano, the Mirlo Blanco activity complex is in operation with the Mirlo sledge, slides with sliding carpet with doughnuts, as in summer, and the ice rink from 6 December.
The Al Ándalus and Borreguiles rentals are open for ski storage and lockers.
The underground car park in the Plaza de Andalucía is free of charge until 5 December.
This offer of activities in Sierra Nevada will be maintained until further evaluation of the weather and snow conditions in the first days of next week.

Sierra Nevada opens the summer season with a concert by rock band Apache

A concert by the band Apache, in collaboration with the Granada Music and Dance Festival, opens this Saturday (21.30h in the Plaza de Andalucía, free) the summer programme in the ski and mountain resort, which will continue with mountain activities, electric bikes, sports, music and astro-tourism activities until 25 August.
&nbsp;The recital by the legendary cover band is already a classic at the start of summer in Sierra Nevada. Hours before the Apache start with their repertoire of the best pop rock of all time, the summer facilities and activities on the great mountain of Granada will already be up and running.
&nbsp;Two ski lifts (the Al-Andalus gondola lift and the Veleta chairlift) will take users from the 2,100 metres of Pradollano to 3,000 metres above sea level, from where some of the most attractive mountain trails in the Sierra Nevada, such as the route to the Veleta, Tajos de la Virgen, Elorrieta or Mulhacén and the excursions to the lagoons around the resort (Yeguas, Lagunillos de la Virgen or La Caldera) will start.
&nbsp;At the same time, the Mirlo Blanco activity park will open with facilities for children and families, the swimming pool at the Montebajo sports club and the guided routes on electric bicycles.

El programa de astronomía volverá a girar sobre las observaciones del amanecer y atardecer desde el Veleta, visitas al observatorio astronómico, excursiones para la observación de la luna o el cielo nocturno y las jornadas de observación de las Perseidas (9 y 10 de agosto) como fechas más destacadas.

La oferta cultural se completará con el festival de rock Sierra Nevada por Todo lo Alto, que volverá a ser el plato fuerte del programa musical (23 y 24 de agosto). El viernes 23 tendrá como cabeza de cartel al grupo Mujeres y también actuaran Alerta Cross y Berrinches. El sábado es el turno de Hins, Jornada B y Red Soul Community.
&nbsp;La festividad de la Virgen de las Nieves de Pradollano, del 2 al 5 de agosto con la tradicional romería a los Tajos de la Virgen la madrugada del 4 de&nbsp;agosto.
&nbsp;La Cicloturista al Veleta (cicloturismo) y el Subida Internacional Pico Veleta (ultrafondo) componen el programa deportivo del verano&nbsp;2024.
&nbsp;Durante el verano, un buen número de restaurantes y establecimientos de alojamiento garantizarán el disfrute estival de Sierra Nevada, donde el paisaje de alta montaña y las suaves temperaturas volverán a ser sus grandes atractivos.

Hinds and Mujeres, headliners of the Sierra Nevada Por Todo lo Alto Festival

The SIERRA NEVADA POR TODO LO ALTO Festival, the highest altitude musical event of the summer in Spain, has a full line-up for its 14th edition which, as always free of charge, will be held on 23rd and 24th August in the Plaza de Andalucía in Pradollano.
Three bands per night and a morning children's programme dedicated to the little ones make up the combination of rock, mountains and family for one of the most unique events on the national festival scene. 
The first of the most important names to come up to the mountain this year is one of the female rock bands that the organisers have had their eye on for years and that had been impossible to book due to scheduling: THE HINDS. In this 14th edition of the SIERRA NEVADA POR TODO LO ALTO Festival, the guitar rock of one of our most international bands will be playing at the top.
The other leading group is MUJERES. MUJERES is part of the emotional memory of several generations: of those who, like them, went back to striped T-shirts and old instruments. Once again they are back with new songs.
The Granadian festival, which is characterised as a family festival to be enjoyed in the middle of nature, cannot forget its musical workshops for children given by the music school Gabba Hey, which are held every year in morning sessions and divided by age. These workshops are usually sold out in minutes. Very soon we will be announcing the dates and instruments chosen for this year's workshops, remembering that places are limited. With the sponsorship of San Miguel beers, the SIERRA NEVADA POR TODO LO ALTO will once again be one of the most awaited festivals to say goodbye to the summer.

Sierra Nevada faces the last week of the season with 19 kilometres of skiable slopes

Sierra Nevada faces the last week of the winter season with 19 skiable kilometres concentrated in the Veleta and Borreguiles areas with the usual winter timetable (8.30am to 4.45pm). The snow, with thicknesses in the open areas ranging from 20 to 90 centimetres, is of spring quality. Until Sunday 28 April, the last day of the 2023/24 season, five ski lifts will be open (Al Ándalus gondola lift, Emile Allais and Veleta chairlifts, Dauro II carpet and Zayas chairlift) which will provide access to this ski offer, the only one of its kind in Southern Europe. The resort will also keep facilities open for non-skiers in Pradollano (Mirlo sledge) and Borreguiles (snow slides). Likewise, Sierra Nevada will offer very special prices on ski passes and access to the underground car park for this last week. On the other hand, the resort closed the season's sports calendar this weekend with the celebration of the Asogaf charity trophy (moguls) and the Fernando Rivera Memorial, in ski mountaineering. In addition, the riders of the national team continue in this last week with their post-season concentration with morning training sessions on the Cordón slope, in the Veleta area.

Sierra Nevada faces the first weekend of April with more than 90 skiable kilometres, with slopes in all areas of the resort, the entire operating vertical drop (1,200 metres), up to two and a half metres thick, and an extensive sports and music programme in what is one of the busiest and liveliest moments of the 2023/24 winter season.  After last weekend's snowfalls and strong winds, the resort's technical services have recovered the offer prior to the passage of the Nelson squall, which, in addition to bringing between 50 and 80 centimetres of new snow, hit some of the resort's ski lifts hard, generating blocks of ice on pulleys and rockers, and unhooking the cable of chairlifts such as Stadium, Monachil or Virgen de las Nieves.  All in all, the resort faces the spring season with great snow conditions. The Laguna and Borreguiles areas accumulate up to two and a half metres of powder snow, the same quality as in the Veleta area with almost two metres of snow on some pistes. The other three sectors of the resort, Loma Dílar, Río and Cauchiles-Parador accumulated between 75 and 130 centimetres of spring snow.

Intense sporting and musical agenda
As for the rest, the sporting and musical agenda this weekend is one of the most intense of the winter season.
The Sun and Snow festival kicks off this Friday with its fifth edition, the most ambitious electronic music event held at the highest altitude in southern Europe, with four stages distributed from Pradollano to Borreguiles, where - until Sunday - 36 musical sessions will take place.
The sports agenda includes five major events. The most popular will be the Ultra Sierra Nevada with more than 1,500 mountain runners registered in its four distances: Ultra, Trail, Marathon and Half Marathon. The main event, the 100 km Ultra, starts this Friday (22.00h) in Granada; the first runners will arrive at Pradollano, after reaching an altitude of 3,000 metres, at midday on Saturday.
Another of the big events will be the National Veterans Trophy, which will attract the best Spanish skiers in the Masters category to Sierra Nevada. This edition will be dedicated to the late former president of the FADI, Juan Luis Hernández, who was one of the driving forces behind this competition.
On the other hand, one of the best Spanish skiers of all time, Carolina Ruiz, will be at the head of theAudio Quattro Cup-Carolina Ruiz Challenge, considered one of the most important ski competitions for children on the national scene. 
The Andalusian University Alpine Skiing Championship and theTrofeo Ruralito - Copa Andalucía de Esquí Alpino complete the sports agenda for the first weekend of April.

Sierra Nevada hosts this weekend the most important winter sports competition of the season in Spain with the celebration of two events of the Snowboard Cross World Cup in which a hundred of the best world riders of the discipline will participate, among them the members of the Spanish team with the rider from San Sebastian Lucas Eguibar at the head.
The two rounds of the Sierra Nevada SBX World Cup were presented today in the Alhambra. After the official photo of the participating teams in the Jardines del Partal, the Director General of Sports Systems and Values of the Junta de Andalucía, María de Nova, stressed that "Andalusia is once again hosting major sporting events which, as well as promoting sport, serve as an important tourist and cultural attraction. 
"That is why it is so important that Andalusia is hosting this Snowboard Cross World Cup, we have that privilege, and it will also take place in a wonderful environment such as Sierra Nevada, which is undoubtedly a plus for the competition and for the athletes who visit us," she stressed.

The competition, sponsored by the Consejería de Turismo, Cultura y Deporte de la Junta de Andalucía with co-financing from the European Union, is held just after the World Snowboard Championships in Bakuriani (Georgia) and before the last two races (in Veysonnaz, Switzerland; and Mr. St. Ann, Canada) that will close the annual SBX World Cup circuit.
The CEO of Cetursa Sierra Nevada, Jesús Ibáñez, has highlighted the "enormous effort" of the team of constructors of Sierra Nevada to configure, "not always with favourable weather", a circuit "of great attraction" for the riders, the public and the televisions. 
"Of the 10 competitions in the world, two are held here in SN. We have been working on this for a long time, we want to thank the role of Spainsnow and the Andalusian Winter Sports Federation (FADI) for wanting to take on this project together with us. We want people to enjoy themselves, the people of Granada and Andalusia to be able to go up and see this world spectacle," said Ibáñez.
The Loma de Dílar SBX circuit consists of six banked corners, four jumps and seven bumpy areas (dubbies). In Spain, Teledeporte, Eurosport and Andalucía Televisión will broadcast the Sierra Nevada World Cup, while 20 television channels will distribute the signal in European, Asian and American countries.
The president of the Royal Spanish Winter Sports Federation (RFEDI), May Peus, recalled that holding top-level events in Spain "is included in our Strategic Plan. We started to believe it in 2017 after the snowboard and freeski World Cup, in which we had some fantastic results together with the bronze medal of Regino Hernández at the Winter Olympics in PyeongChang. Thanks to the Movistar Cup we have riders like Álvaro -Romero- who is still a junior and has medals in events of this style (juniors) and who has just had a great World Cup. We have Spanish heroes who are the rivals to beat in this World Cup in Sierra Nevada.
In this sense, the president of the Andalusian federation, Carlos Santandreu, has underlined the possibilities of sporting evolution of Andalusian riders thanks to Sierra Nevada's commitment to snowboard cross; so much so that local riders like Candela Fuentes and Lorenzo Jiménez, who this year have participated in the European Cup SBX, are already in the orbit of the national team.
FIS snowboard coordinator Uwe Beier thanked "everyone involved from Sierra Nevada to the federations for organising the two World Cups. It's an important event for us, we want to grow our sport and venues like Sierra Nevada bring us closer to the goal of making it more popular. We have a long circuit with a lot of snow and I'm sure we will enjoy it".
The young rider of RFEDI, Alvaro Romero, representing the Spanish national team, has known today the circuit of the Loma de Dílar and his impression could not be better: "it looks very good, it is a long circuit, big and well done curves, a lot of work when making this circuit. It looks very good and we are very happy". "A very nice race because I was going with high expectations, to give my best level. It went very well, I fought a lot, with the best and I saw myself capable of being with them so I'm very happy to leave Georgia and it's the best thing that could happen to me to come here with the greatest motivation for the Sierra Nevada World Cup."

Sierra Nevada alberga este fin de semana la competición de deportes de invierno más importante de la temporada en España con la celebración de dos pruebas de la Copa del Mundo de Snowboard Cross en la que participarán un centenar de los mejores riders mundiales de la disciplina, entre ellos los integrantes del equipo español con el rider donostiarra Lucas Eguibar al frente.
Las dos pruebas de la Copa del Mundo SBX de Sierra Nevada han sido presentadas hoy en la Alhambra. Tras la foto oficial de los equipos participantes en los Jardines del Partal, la directora general de Sistemas y Valores del Deporte de la Junta de Andalucía, María de Nova, ha subrayado que “Andalucía vuelve a situarse como sede de grandes eventos deportivos que, además de promocionar la práctica deportiva, sirven de importante polo atracción turístico y cultural. 
“Por eso es tan importante que Andalucía sea la sede de esta Copa del Mundo de Snowboard Cross, tenemos ese privilegio, y además se va a desarrollar en un entorno maravilloso como es Sierra Nevada, lo que sin duda es un plus para la competición y para los deportistas que nos visiten”, ha subrayado.

La competición, con el patrocinio de la Consejería de Turismo, Cultura y Deporte de la Junta de Andalucía con la cofinanciación de la Unión Europea, se celebra justo después del Campeonato del Mundo de Snowboard en Bakuriani (Georgia) y antes de las dos últimas carreras (en Veysonnaz, Suiza; y Mr. St. Ann, Canadá) que cerrarán el circuito anual de la Copa del Mundo SBX.
El consejero delegado de Cetursa Sierra Nevada, Jesús Ibáñez, ha destacado el “enorme esfuerzo” del equipo de constructores de Sierra Nevada para configurar, “no siempre con meteorología favorable”, un circuito “de gran atractivo” para los corredores, el público y las televisiones. 
“De las 10 competiciones que hay en el mundo, dos se hacen aquí en SN. Llevamos mucho tiempo trabajando en esto, queremos agradecer el papel de Spainsnow y de la Federación Andaluza de Deportes de Invierno (FADI) por querer asumir este proyecto junto con nosotros. Buscamos que la gente pueda disfrutar, que los granadinos y los andaluces puedan subir a ver este espectáculo mundial”, ha señalado Ibáñez.
El circuito SBX de la Loma de Dílar se compone de seis curvas peraltadas, cuatro saltos y siete zonas bacheadas (dubbies). En territorio nacional, Teledeporte, Eurosport y Andalucía Televisión ofrecerán la Copa del Mundo de Sierra Nevada, mientras que 20 cadenas de televisión distribuirán la señal en países europeos, asiáticos y americanos.

El presidente de la Real Federación Española de Deportes de Invierno (RFEDI), May Peus,ha recordado que  la celebración de pruebas de alto nivel en España “está plasmado en nuestro Plan Estratégico. Nos lo empezamos a creer en 2017 a raíz del mundial de snowboard y freeski en el que tuvimos unos fantásticos resultados junto con el bronce de Regino Hernández en los JJOO de Invierno de PyeongChang. Gracias a la Copa Movistar tenemos a riders como Álvaro -Romero- que es junior aún y que tiene medallas en eventos de este estilo (juniors) y que viene de hacer un gran Mundial. Tenemos héroes españoles que son los rivales a batir en esta Copa del Mundo de Sierra Nevada.
En ese sentido, el presidente de la federación andaluz, Carlos Santandreu, ha subrayado las posibilidades de evolución deportiva de los riders andaluces gracias a la apuesta de Sierra Nevada por el snowboard cross; tanto es así que corredores locales como Candela Fuentes y Lorenzo Jiménez, que este año han participan en Copa de Europa SBX ya están en la órbita del equipo nacional.
El coordinador de snowboard de la FIS, Uwe Beier, ha agradecido” a todo el mundo involucrado desde Sierra Nevada a las federaciones por la organización de las dos copas del mundo. Es un evento importante para nosotros, queremos hacer crecer nuestro deporte y que sedes como la de Sierra Nevada nos acercan al objetivo de hacerlo más popular. Tenemos un circuito largo y con mucha nieve y seguro que lo disfrutaremos”.
El joven rider de RFEDI, Alvaro Romero, en representación del equipo nacional español, ha conocido hoy el circuito de la Loma de Dílar y su impresión no puede ser mejor: “tiene muy buena pinta, es un circuito largo, curvas grandes y bien hechas, mucho trabajo a la hora de hacer este circuito. Tiene muy buena y estamos muy contentos.” “Una carrera muy bonita porque iba con expectativas altas, a dar mi mejor nivel. Salió muy bien, luché mucho, con los mejores y me vi capaz de estar con ellos así que me voy muy feliz de Georgia y es lo mejor que me podía pasar para venir aquí con la mayor motivación a la Copa del Mundo de Sierra Nevada.”
